Description

The Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) is a native evergreen that’s a fantastic addition to any Longbranch yard. This fast-growing tree, reaching 50–80 feet tall with a spread of 20–40 feet, boasts soft, bluish-green needles in bundles of five and slender 3–6-inch cones. Its straight trunk and airy canopy create a striking look, perfect for shade, privacy, or a natural backdrop. Growing 1–2 feet per year, it’s a low-maintenance choice that thrives in sunny spots with well-drained, sandy or loamy soil.

Ecologically, the Eastern White Pine is a gem. It provides food and shelter for birds like chickadees and small mammals, boosting local biodiversity. Its lightweight, straight-grained wood has historically been prized for construction and furniture, but today it’s valued for its environmental benefits and beauty. While adaptable, it prefers cool, humid climates and can live 200–400 years in ideal conditions.

To thrive, plant it away from salted roads or polluted areas, as it’s sensitive to both. Keep the soil moist but not soggy during its first year to establish strong roots.

Easter White Pine

If it grows somewhere that it’s exposed to a lot of wind, the eastern white pine can become a bit lopsided, with small, short branches on the side that faces the wind.
